Cody y Meg han sido amigas desde pequeñas: han ido juntas a clase, de vacaciones... pero su relación cambia cuando a Meg le conceden una beca para estudiar en otra ciudad.
Se ven cada vez menos por lo que se mandan correos contándose su día a
día, pero ya no es lo mismo. Además, esos e-mails cada vez llegan con
menos frecuencia.
Será entonces cuando los padres de Meg le pidan a Cody que recoja las cosas que su hija tenía en la casa de Tacoma, la ciudad en la que estaba viviendo. Allí conocerá a los compañeros de piso de Meg (Tree, Alice, Harry y Richard) y a Ben McCallister, un músico que atrae a las chicas con mucha facilidad.
Entre las cosas de Meg hay un ordenador portátil donde Cody encontrará unos correos sospechosos y un archivo codificado, por lo que decidirá investigar por qué se suicidó su mejor amiga, arresgándose a descubrir que ella no es como pensaba.
Así comienza "I was here", la nueva novela de Gayle Forman (autora de "Si decido quedarme", entre otras). Más que la portada, similar al poster de la película, o el título lo que más me atrajo de esta novela fue su sinopsis y, sobre todo, el tema que trata: el suicidio, pues nunca antes había leído una novela sobre ello. Me resulta llamativo que en nuestro país sea una especie de tabú y en otros países, como Canadá (del que puedo hablar después de vivir allí durante un semestre), no lo sea. Allí tienen charlas sobre el suiidio, te dan claves para detectar síntomas de querer cometerlo y te ofrecen ayuda para evitarlo. Incluso en las estaciones de metro hay carteles preventivos y teléfonos directos para evitarlo.
Volviendo al libro, Gayle Forman trata este tema con seriedad y delicadeza, exponiendo al final, en la nota del autor, que aunque muchas veces nos sentamos tristes o cansados no debemos rendirnos porque todo irá bien al final y tenemos gente que realmente nos quiere a nuestro alrededor aunque no nos demos cuenta. Creo que está bien que un autor se involucre en estos temas y esté dispuesto a orientar y a indicar a sus lectores organizaciones para ponerse en contacto en caso de necesidad.
En cuanto a los personajes, he sentido que Meg está presente en la novela como otro personaje más aunque solo aparece en recuerdos, cosa que me parece bastante compleja de hacer, darle consistencia a un personaje que realmente no está. Cody me ha parecido un personaje muy real con unos sentimientos tan viscerales que traspasan el papel. Ben McCallister me ha gustado más que Adam (el novio de Mía en "Si decido quedarme") por su carácter.
Los personajes secundarios, aunque no estén muy detallados, puedes identificarlos claramente y saber cómo actuarían en una situación concreta.
A pesar de que haya una relación amorosa no es lo principal, ya que se da más importancia a la relación de amistad de las dos chicas y a los sentimientos de culpabilidad e ira de Cody. También cobran importancia los valores de la familia y de la educación.
Aunque haya una investigación de por medio, no hay tanta acción o
misterio como pudiera haber en un thriller policiaco. Sin embargo, "I
was here" te engancha y hace que queras seguir leyendo hasta el final.
Para quienes no conzcáis a Gayle Forman, os diré que escribe de manera sencilla, con un lenguaje muy juvenil y sin tapujos, con más descripciones de emociones que de espacios y con multitud de diálogos tanto externos como internos, lo que aporta rapidez a la lectura. No puedo más que recomendaros su lectura.
